Lighting a Music Video

Lesson on Lighting

  • I think the streak filter is very effective, and conventionally works well in a music video- looks fairly straight forward to make our own one too.
  • I think the spotlights are a good idea to get the most out of the artists performance and highlight them and show there star persona
  • Good for creating shadows depending on mood and lyrics of song
  • White, or even varied coloured card can be used to reflect light on to the artists face or head so it isnt as harsh
  • Artificial lighting indoors will allow us a greater time to film, whereas natural lighting involves lots of research into the time of day when it would be most suitable to film

The lesson on artificial lighing really helped me understand what we would need for our music video- As we are going to show live perfomance of the atrist playing on the guitar during the chorus, we will need to light this well to get this conventional look. To do this we should use use a spot-light, and maybe a second to light the wall. I think it would be good to have a filter too, to show a definite change in the song, as it will have moved from stop motion to live action. We could also use a piece of card to reflect the light for a softer tone. We should use the spotlight to either brighten the artists face, and decrease shadows, or create more shadows for a darker, moodier effect- however this is not the look we want to achieve.

We can even focus in on one part of the artists face using the video cameras to enhance the artist and her star persona.
